Epic Universe or Islands of Adventure: Where to Go First?

A year ago, nobody was asking this question. You booked Universal, you went to Islands of Adventure, job done. Epic Universe changed that completely. Since opening in May 2025, it's added five brand new worlds, two exceptional coasters, and the most ambitious Harry Potter land Universal has ever built. Now families are arriving with two Universal parks to fit into a two-week holiday and genuinely no idea which one to tackle first. Here's how to think about it.

1. Epic Universe Is the Harder Park to Crack

In summer 2026, Epic Universe is still pulling massive crowds. It's been open just over a year, the buzz hasn't faded, and families from across the US are visiting it for the first time all through the school holidays. For UK families arriving jet-lagged and disoriented on day one, that matters more than you'd think.

Islands of Adventure has been there since 1999. The locals know it, the crowds are spread across familiar rides, and the park layout is well-documented. Epic Universe, by contrast, is still in that honeymoon period where practically everyone in the park came specifically because they wanted Epic Universe. That creates sustained pressure on every headline attraction: Starfall Racers, Dragon Racer's Rally, and anything inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Ministry of Magic.

The practical upshot: if you're doing both parks on consecutive days, save your most rested morning for Epic Universe. Rope drop here matters more than almost anywhere in Orlando right now. Get there before the gates open, head straight to Ministry of Magic or Super Nintendo World, and you'll have the big rides done before most people have finished breakfast. Save Islands of Adventure for the day when you're a bit more settled and confident with how Universal parks work.

2. Islands of Adventure Has Hagrid's (and That Changes Everything)

Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is, without any real competition, the best theme park ride in Orlando. That's not sentiment talking. It consistently ranks as the highest-rated theme park attraction in the world and it earns that ranking every single time. If your family hasn't ridden it, it should sit near the top of your entire Florida trip list, not just your Universal list.

The problem is that Hagrid's queues are still brutal in summer. The standby line hits 90 minutes by 9:30am on busy days and doesn't come back down until the afternoon thunderstorms clear the park. If you visit Islands of Adventure on day two, when you're already comfortable with how Universal operates, you'll know to be at the Hogsmeade entrance for rope drop and make Hagrid's your very first move.

Velocicoaster is also here, and if you've got kids who are 54 inches or taller (roughly age ten and up), it's the best pure coaster on Universal property. Don't write Islands of Adventure off as the lesser park. It's exceptional.

3. If You're a Nintendo Family, Epic Universe Has to Come First

Super Nintendo World at Epic Universe is something genuinely special for families with kids who've grown up on Mario. The interactive wristband experience, Bowser's Challenge, and the Donkey Kong Country expansion make it feel like a complete day within a single world. The issue is that it's also the section of Epic Universe most likely to hit maximum capacity early, because children's patience for queuing runs out faster than adults' and parents respond by queuing earlier and harder.

If your kids are eight to fourteen and Nintendo is their thing, this is your reason to do Epic Universe first while everyone still has energy and enthusiasm. Arrive at rope drop, head directly to Super Nintendo World, bank those rides before the rest of the park fills. You can come back to Celestial Park, the Monsters Lair, and the How to Train Your Dragon world once the Nintendo crowds have peaked and started to ease off.

Islands of Adventure doesn't have anything comparable for the Nintendo generation. It's superb for Marvel fans and Harry Potter fans, but if you've got a nine-year-old who's been dreaming about throwing shells at Bowser, that experience only exists at Epic Universe.

4. The Harry Potter Question Is More Complicated Than It Looks

Both parks have a Wizarding World, and this trips families up more than almost anything else in Universal planning.

Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure is Hogwarts. The castle, the village from the films, the snowy rooftops, butterbeer, and Forbidden Journey inside the castle itself. It's the original, it launched the whole concept in 2010, and it still delivers. For families with younger children who just want to feel like they're inside the films, this is the more immediately satisfying experience.

Ministry of Magic in Epic Universe takes a very different approach. It's set in 1990s Paris, it's a completely different chapter of the wizarding story rather than a retelling of the films, and the Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry ride is outstanding. The theming is extraordinary in a way that rewards careful attention. For families who are deep into the books, it's the better experience. For a seven-year-old who wants Hogwarts, it might feel confusing.

My honest advice: don't try to do both Harry Potter lands in a single day. You'll rush both and enjoy neither. If you're spreading across two Universal days, this solves itself. If you can only do one park, Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure is the safer choice for mixed-age groups.
